Origin :- Muslim greeting, 1610s, from Arabic salam (also in Urdu, Persian), literally "peace" (cf. Hebrew shalom); in full, (as)salam 'alaikum "peace be upon you," from base of salima "he was safe" (cf. Islam, Muslim).
