Probably cognate with Old English leoð "song, poem, hymn," from Proto-Germanic *leuthan (cf. Old Norse ljoð "strophe," German Lied "song," Gothic liuþon "to praise"), and from an echoic PIE root *leu-. Related: Lauded; lauding.
